If you are reading this then obviously you have already lost your natural teeth due to poor oral hygiene or due to age and are now using dentures. Making sure that your dentures are taken care of properly is as important as taking care of your natural teeth. The difference here is that once you’ve lost your natural teeth you need to wait for sometime before they get replaced either by your permanent teeth or with implants or with dentures. Once your dentures go bad you could get them replaced with new ones however the cost of dentures are quite high and this can be avoided with just a few basic precautions. These steps would help ensure that your dentures are maintained in good condition.
You must have noticed by now that dentures are quite delicate and your doctor must have already advised you to be careful with them while putting them in your mouth and removing them. He must have already told you to avoid dropping them. While cleaning your dentures make sure that you use a soft bristled brush. When you’re cleaning your dentures hold them above a large container containing plenty of water. This would ensure that they don’t break incase they happen to slip out off your hand while your cleaning them.
Just like your natural teeth your dentures are also prone to getting stained. Avoid foods that that could cause discoloration and be selective about what you eat. Ask your doctor for foods that might cause discoloration so that you are well informed.
They also require to be flossed regularly to ensure that they are clean just like regular teeth. This should be done daily to make sure that any food particles stuck between the teeth are removed. This would also help you avoid build up of plaque on the teeth. Remember that since your dentures go into your mouth everyday you must ensure that they are maintained well. Your natural teeth would send signals to the brain if anything was stuck in between them however your dentures would not be able to do that and you should therefore ensure that proper care is taken off them.
