The pain that you have suffered from with a decaying tooth has finally been removed, however the pain if the extraction will linger on for a few more days. The local anesthetic will wear off within a few hours and leave you in pain that may not be bearable.
The first thing you need to do is to apply an ice pack to your face immediately after you get home. This helps to ease the pain in your jaw and decreases the flow of blood in your mouth. This helps to heal the area faster as the lesser blood you loose the faster you heal.
Don’t try to speak or open your mouth for a few hours after the extraction. If you are able to get a few hours of rest or sleep that will help you. Do not let air enter into your mouth as it will increase the intensity of the pain. You must cover your ears as well to avoid air entering into your ears.
Do not apply hot water to your face or a hot water compress to get rid of the pain. This will increase the flow of the blood. Avoid using balms and pain relieving creams on the cheek to get rid of the pain as this will cause you a lot of harm.
Avoid eating spicy or hot food for the next few days following the extraction. The spices will aggravate the pain and slow down the healing process. Hot drinks like coffee, tea, water and food in general will affect the wound and cause complications with the wound healing.
Do not tilt your head on the side of the extraction and do not lean forward with your head down (face forward). Doing this will cause pain as the blood will flow in that direction. You must tilt your head back ass far as possible to avoid pain.
Sleep on your back rather on your side for a few days. Avoiding hot showers and baths are a good idea as well.
