How to Cure a Poison Ivy Rash

August 22, 2009

Poison ivy is not in the true sense of the word poisonous. It got its name as 70 percent of people are allergic to the plant; this makes it the world’s most common allergy. Once you come in contact with the plant you develop an itchy rash within 2 to 3 hours. Once you start itching you begin to spread the infection to different parts of your body. The rash also spreads when you touch the clothes that have in contact with the plant.

When you are in the outdoors it is better to make sure that you watch out for the ivy plants and avoid contact with them. Prevention is better than cure; and true to it’s meaning; it will save you from a lot of pain. If you do come in contact with the plant then there are a few remedies that you can try in order to prevent the spread of the germs and rash. Else you risk spreading the rash to your entire body.

You must take a shower immediately. Wash the affected part of your body. Avoid taking a bath as soaking in the water may put you at risk of spreading the infection. Do not use a washcloth as it may cause the rash to intensify and use a soap that does not have moisturizers. This will help to get rid of the bacteria and prevent the spread of the rash.

If you are outdoors and are unable to have a shower then rubbing alcohol on the affected area is the next best solution to prevent the rash from spreading. Alcohol will also ensure that the rash does not spread to different parts of the body.

Aloe Vera is also very effective when dealing with a rash. Cut the leaf of the plant and rub the gel like substance on the affected area. It has a cooling sensation; this helps to reduce the burning sensation caused by the rash. You could also use any aloe based cream that you may have.

Once the rash had dried you must dab vinegar on the area to help to fasten the healing process. This will also ensure that there are no scars left after the rash has dried up.

If the itching sensation is unbearable; then soak a cotton ball in milk and rub it on the affected area. This will help to soothe the skin and relieve the itching sensation. It also reduces reddening of the skin.
