Diaper rashes are common and almost every baby suffers from them eventually however careful a parent may be. The area covered by the diaper gets red if the baby is kept in a wet or damp diaper for a long time. Sometimes due to friction caused between the wet diaper and the skin small water boils or blisters could develop.

A diaper rash is very distressing for a baby and they find it very painful and uncomfortable especially when they have a bowel movement or while urinating. A baby who has a diaper rash feels even more uncomfortable in a wet diaper because the urine stings the already sensitive skin. Being in a wet diaper for a long time is one of the main causes of a diaper rash.

Some of the other factors that cause a diaper rash include what type of food the infant consumes or the type of food that a breast-feeding mother consumes. Other factors like the kind of detergent used to wash the babies clothes, perfumed powders, fabric softeners, diapers that are very tight and cut out air circulation and products that come in contact with the baby’s skin could also lead or cause diaper rashes.

Normally most babies do not require a trip to the doctor to deal with a diaper rash however if you do notice that the skin has broken or there is bleeding or if there are blisters developing and the baby has a fever then I recommend that you seek medical attention to avoid infection.

Here are a few simple steps that you could follow to help ease the pain and discomfort caused due to a diaper rash. It is important that you pay attention to your babies needs. Change the baby as frequently as possible and use diapers that are from a reputed manufacturer. Avoid using diapers that are very tight.

The diaper that you use should allow air to circulate while still not being loose and hampering your baby’s movements. Before putting on a new diaper rinse your baby and pat her dry. Avoid rubbing the baby’s skin with a towel; always remember to pat your baby dry. Avoid using perfumed powders as these contain chemicals in them that come into contact with your baby’s skin causing rashes and allergies. Zinc oxide is very effective in dealing with diaper rashes; you can apply a thin layer of the gel on the affected area.
