Personally, I wake up every morning and crave a sweet breakfast. I dream of chocolate cakes and pancakes all night long. We all know what it feels like to wake up in the morning and have a craving that we know we can fulfill. What we are not aware of is that it is ok to indulge in a sweet treat or a sweet breakfast.

The key is to top it with other essential nutrients. Protein is one such nutrient that helps to reduce sugar cravings. When you do crave sugar you can either choose to eat a protein rich meal or have a few bites of the sweet to satisfy your craving and then top up the meal with proteins.

If you want to have a breakfast with pancakes or a chocolate muffin you must first think of the consequences of indulging. Remember, sugar will slow you down and make you sluggish during the day. If you are on a vacation or on a day away from work and your chores then you can definitely indulge; however if that is not the case then you must make sure that you add some semblance of protein in the meal. Eat smaller portions of the sweet treat, just a few bites can’t really harm too much.

Remember, proteins help your meal to stay with you for a longer period of time. If you eat a meal that is high in sugar; you are bound to crash within a few hours. However if you add some protein to the meal you will maintain your energy levels through the day. Adding protein to your breakfast is simple. If you are having sugar coated cereal then add a few walnuts or almonds to the cereal. You can add raisins on your chocolate muffins and doughnuts and cottage cheese will go perfectly well with pancakes.

If you must indulge in pancakes and waffles then you must opt for whole grains rather than white flour. In this way you reduce the amount of fats you consume and increase the amount of fiber in the meal. The fiber will also help to absorb the fats and sugars from the meal. Instead of sprinkling sugar on the pancakes; add a few fresh or dried fruits to the pancakes.
