The key to a healthy pregnancy is eating the right food in the right portions at the right time. You must remember that the food that you eat and this time is the only form of nutrition for your baby and it also creates her taste and likes and dislikes for the food that you eat.

Ideally you must gain about 15 pounds but if you are under weight then you doctor will recommend gaining a few extra pounds. Don’t worry about the weight that you gain, you will shed all of it with the running around you will be doing after the baby arrives.

To start a healthy diet you must first note down the foods that make you sick, eliminate them. Next goes junk food, fried foods and then finally spicy foods. What you will be left with are all the healthy options for you.

Keep a journal and note down your food cravings, timings of your hunger pangs and monitor the portions that you are eating. This is a way to keep a record of eating and knowing what food upsets you.

Don’t skip meals ever, no matter how busy your schedule may be. You need to eat your meals on time and avoid putting meals as a second choice over any other task. Eat smaller meals and snack between your meals.

Never skip your medication. The vitamins that are prescribed to you are vital for your health as well as the child’s health. You must take them religiously.

Avoid eating carbohydrates and opt for protein rich food and fibrous foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables will load you up on these. Fish is a good source of protein but you must avoid shell fish.

Avoid loading up on sugar. This does not add to your nutrition at all; however, all pregnant women crave sweets and indulging in your cravings once in a while is not a bad idea.

Avoid eating red meats. Chicken and turkey are healthier choices
