Nose bleeds begin when there is lack of moisture in the air. During this time the mucus membranes gets dry and crack and this leads to the bleeding. Other causes of nose bleeds include hypertension, colds, chronic infections, allergies and violent sneezing (common to those suffering from sinus).
Preventive measures
If your child suffers from nose bleeds then it may be due to nose picking. Discourage any such activity and make sure that their nails are short in order to avoid damage to the blood vessels in the nose. You must also have a humidifier in the room that you sleep in. The machine will help to control the temperatures and the moisture in the air. It is extremely helpful in the case of nose bleeds or sinus. Make sure that there are no triggers to your allergies that are near you. This causes constant sneezing which leads to nose bleed. Smoking also has an effect on your condition and hence you must avoid smoke, second hand smoke is equally harmful.
What to do in case of a nose bleed?
If you suffer from a nose bleed then you must make sure that you do not sit with your head leaning forward. Sit on a chair and tilt your head backwards in order to stop the flow of blood. Put a piece of a paper towel in your nose so that it soaks the excess blood and prevent further flow. You can also use a cold compress with an ice pack or a towel dipped in cold water.
After the bleeding has seized; you must drink a cold drink or fruit juice. Avoid drinking any hot beverages or eating hot and spicy foods. This will cause irritation and increase the bleeding internally.
You may feel dizzy or weak during the bleeding and for a few hours after. In order to take care of this you must drink a beverage that is rich in Vitamin C. If the dizziness persists then you must consult a doctor as the symptoms may be of an underlying illness.
Do not blow your nose to check if the bleeding still persists. This can cause damage to the delicate nerves in your nose.
