How to Ensure Good Oral Hygiene as You Age

Taking care of your teeth is very important in all stages of life. As kids, we all remember our parents asking us if we have brushed before bedtime. The basics of maintaining good oral health remain the same, irrespective of age, however extra care is required as you age. A good set of teeth, are much more than just a pretty smile. It helps you bite into fruits and chew food which is very important for proper digestion and actually allows you to enjoy most food items. As we get old, our teeth also start getting weak. Oral hygiene becomes even more important as you age. It allows you to maintain your regular eating habits. If possible try flossing at least once a day. It helps remove the left over food particles and plaque that a toothbrush may leave behind. When brushing, use gentle circular strokes and avoid using unnecessary force, as the teeth tend to become weak with age.

Rinse your mouth with a mouthwash in the middle of the day. Look for mouthwashes which are made specifically to reduce tooth decay and help other health related dental problems.

Make it a habit to gargle after you eat anything. This is the one very important habit that almost everyone neglects. This is very important to maintain good oral hygiene as it gets rid of any food particles that can be left behind after eating. It is these food particles that remain in the mouth and start decaying and give rise to dental problems.
