How to Fight Influenza with Home and Herbal Remedies

August 11, 2009

Influenza is commonly known as the flu. Symptoms include body ache, weakness, cold and headache. It is a viral infection which attacks the immune system and the digestive system. As a result the person looses appetite and can become nauseous.

Few home remedies if done early can actually save you a trip to the doctor and get you back on your feet without the use of strong antibiotics. The most common side effect of antibiotics is extreme weakness, which is why people try to avoid them as much as possible.

Turmeric powder is one ingredient that can provide relief from influenza. Turmeric has amazing medicinal and disease fighting properties. It helps boost the immune system and fight off the viral infection. Mix a teaspoon of turmeric in a cup of warm milk and have this twice or thrice in a day. The milk will act as substitute for meals in case of loss of appetite and will help you get strong. If warm milk makes you nauseous, mix some honey with the turmeric powder, eat a teaspoonful with a glass of water.

Influenza can dehydrate you; drink a lot of fluids in the form of juices as these will help restore energy. Tender coconut water is an excellent natural source of electrolytes, drinking the water of one coconut everyday helps restore the minerals which you loose from the body.

Drinking the juice of an onion with honey mixed in equal quantities also helps cure influenza. Honey also has medicinal qualities and helps boost immunity.

Boil fresh basil leaves with ginger in a liter of water, reduce the liquid, add honey or water to taste and sip on this during the day. Ginger helps cure any stomach disorders or infections and basil helps detoxify.

Garlic also helps cure influenza. Crush a clove of garlic and swallow this like a tablet. Alternately, garlic can also be used as seasoning in food. Stir fry some vegetables with some ginger and garlic using very little oil. This way you can get the benefits of both ginger and garlic together.

Eat very light; avoid all types of meats, you can have a small portion of steamed fish as this is lighter to digest. You can steam the fish with ginger and garlic to add flavor.

Trying all of the above remedies should make you feel better in a few days, if you don’t, consult your doctor for medical advice.
