Nits are the eggs that the lice lay in your hair. They are extremely minute white oval shaped eggs that look like dandruff flakes and they attach themselves to the shafts of your hair. Sometimes they get transferred to your clothes. They are extremely contagious and they spread quickly.
These nits hatch within 2 weeks and they are best dealt with through eliminating them with herbal treatments. It is a common infection in children in the age group of 2 t o12 and is common to girls as they have longer hair. If you constantly feel your scalp itch or you find tiny sores around your neck, behind your ears or on your shoulders then you probably have been infected by lice and nits.
The lice that lay the nits spread quickly and schools and day cares are the most common breeding grounds. Also sharing items of personal hygiene like combs, towels and clothing like coats, hats, shawls are the means of spreading the infection.
In order to eliminate these pests you need to use a fine toothed comb to brush your hair. When you do so then the nits get trapped within the teeth and they are eliminated easily. You also have several oils and shampoos that are available over the counter that helps to get rid of the lice; however you must be cautious about their use if you suffer from any skin diseases like eczema, or allergies or asthma. Also you must take care when using these products when you are pregnant or breast feeding as they may have a few side effects.
On the herbal front tea tree oil is the best solution to your problem. Dilute the oil in coconut oil and massage it into your scalp. Tie your hair with a scarf or a bandana and let the oils stay on your hair overnight. When you wake up in the morning; wash your hair with warm water and mild shampoo. You will see the dead lice and nits get washed away. Tea tree oil is known for its anti fungal anti bacterial properties and hence it helps to get rid of the lice. The oil also helps to prevent the lice and nits from infesting your head again.
You must also avoid sharing hygiene products and clothes. Wash all garments with warm water if you are aware that you have nits in your hair. This will help to kill the nits that get transferred to your clothes.
