How to Help a Child Recover from Sun Burn
Children have delicate skin that is more prone to sun burn compared to adults. Proper care must be taken to protect your child before leaving the house. Try and avoid the hot hours from 11 am to 4 pm. If you must venture out during these hours then wearing protective eye wear, hats and sunscreen is a must for children. If your child has suffered from a sun burn then the first thing you need to do is add moisture to your skin to prevent peeling.
Before you leave the house to venture in the outdoors you must use a sun protective lotion on your child. Get the highest SPF possible as even the slightest burn will cause your child a lot of discomfort.
If you are planning the entire day outdoors then keep sun screen with you and apply every few hours or so. Keep a bottle of water handy and get your child to sip on it regularly to avoid dehydration. If you are spending a day at the pool or at the beach, wear water proof sunscreen. Slather huge proportions of it all over the body, especially the face, back and arms as these are most exposed when your child is in the water.
If your child is already suffering from a sun burn; then bathe the child in warm water with a few drops of baby oil in it. The oil will help to retain the moisture that has been lost. Avoid a shower as the pressure of the water may cause a stinging sensation on the child’s delicate skin.
After the bath, wipe the child dry and rub Aloe Vera all over the child’s body. Avoid using ice on the affected areas as the ice will generate heat later on.
Since the skin is dry, the child may try to pull out the dry skin. To avoid this bathe the child in milk daily till the inflamed skin is no more red. Milk will help to relieve the burning sensation in the skin and prevent peeling.
Avoid wearing synthetic fibers till the skin soothes itself. Wear light cotton clothes.
