When your baby is born she has no sense of differentiation between day and night. By the time she is 4 months old you must ensure she is on a cycle where she can differentiate between sleep and wake times. You need to get a proper bedtime routine in order to get the child to sleep as it helps the child to grow and be healthy.
At night when you want to get your child to sleep you must dim the lights in the room and avoid sound of any sort. Do not have too much activity in the room and restrict movement or have slow movements.
Do not talk or interact with the child so as to get the child to understand that it is now time to rest. A child that is tired beyond manageable has more difficulty sleeping, so make sure that the child is not over exhausted either. Determine a time that you want the child to sleep by and ensure that you begin the bed time routine at the same time.
Shortlist a bedtime story, lullaby or have a bathing routine that helps the child to fall asleep. In the case of infants; the child mostly prefers a rocking motion to help to put the child to sleep.
In the first few months after birth the child normally does not sleep through the night but normally wakes up several times a night for a feed or a nappy change. By the time the child is 4 months old she sleeps for about 4 to 6 hours at night.
If your child is unable to sleep then you must give the baby a gentle massage. Heat a few drops of almond oil and massage the child’s stomach, back and arms and legs. This helps to increase blood circulation in the body and helps the child to get a few hours of rest.
