How to Improve the Quality of Your Sleep

We all need to sleep. Sleeping helps the body to rejuvenate and ensures that the organs in the body function well after the period of rest. It is not the number of hours of sleep that matter but the quality of sleep that one gets that has an effect on their over all health.

There are few factors that you can look at to ensure that you get quality sleep at night. Firstly you need to analyze all the activities that you perform prior to bedtime and keep a watch on the environment that you sleep in. If you use your bedroom for anything else besides sleeping then there are chances that you will not get quality sleep at night. Design your bedroom mainly for sleeping. Keep distractions like computers and televisions out of the room as far as possible.

You need to review your bedtime rituals. The activities that you perform before you hit the bed can have a huge impact on the quality of your sleep. Make sure that you engage in lighter activities that involve your body slowing down and getting into rest mode. Reading a book, drinking a cup of warm milk or simply meditating will help to relax your muscles and your senses. A simple routine like exercising before bedtime or praying or deep breathing exercises will help to relax your senses. Choose something that you relate with and will help to calm your senses.

Eat dinner three hours prior to bed time. Avoid spicy foods, caffeine, sugar and alcohol during this meal. Eat a light meal that comprises of a salad or a sandwich; keep your carbohydrate consumption low.

Regular exercise is the best way to ensure that you relax and your senses are calm. Walking for 20 to 30 minutes a day will keep you fit and reduces stress. It will also keep your stress levels in check.

If none of these techniques are effective then you can try aromatherapy. Use essential oils in a diffuser or add them to your bath water. Lavender oils work best to reduce stress and rose oil and almond oil are equally effective in ensuring that you get a good night’s rest.
