How To Increase Your Supply Of Breast Milk

May 20, 2009

For women who are healthy and follow a healthy diet breast milk supply is not a problem, yet for others producing enough milk to feed their babies can be quiet a task.

There are times when you know that you are drying up and you do not have enough to satisfy your child’s hunger. It is frustrating as your child is dependant on you for its nourishment and you feel inadequate and helpless.

The first step to increasing your supply is to get plenty of rest and be stress free. When you rest your body gets a chance to produce more milk.

Normally a child feeds and then sleeps, you must do the same. Lie down in the nursery after feeding the child. Your body will immediately start producing more milk for the next session.

You need to eat a nutritious diet and drink plenty of water. You must eat a diet rich in protein, fiber and low on sugar and carbohydrates. Drink plenty of milk, eat plenty of fresh fruits and dehydrated fruits like almonds and figs.

Eat plenty of vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, peas and carrots. Avoid eating spicy foods and stay away from red meat like pork and beef. These reduce your milk supply.

Consult your doctor about the use of multi vitamins to boosting your supply of milk.

Restrict your activity during the first few months after the birth of the child. During this period you are the sole provider of nourishment and hence you need to have a good production of breast milk.

If nothing else works then massage your breasts after every feed so that you stimulate the area to begin production immediately so that you have enough in time for the next feed. Massage in circular motions starting from the nipples moving outside.
