To have healthy eyes in today’s world is nothing short of a miracle. It is difficult to find a person who has good and perfect vision due to the kind of lifestyle that we tend to lead nowadays. People spend most of their time in front of computers, or watching television or reading in bad lighting conditions. All these and other situations have led to our eyesight going bad and this leads to us requiring prescription glasses either for reading purposes or for permanent use.
There are a few things that a person can follow to help make sure that they have good healthy eyes that would last them their lifetime. These are very basic steps and they cannot in any way change your genetic or hereditary conditions. If you do notice that your eyes hurt or you have to strain your eyes or squint to read then you should visit your eye doctor immediately and get your eyes checked.
If you got out in the sun often then you should consider investing in a good pair of sunglasses. Sunglasses that would protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays would be the best though they are slightly on the costlier side. Consider getting 100% UV shades and if you already have prescription glasses then you can also get these with a UV coating for outdoor use. Exposure to UV rays causes inflammation in the whites of your eyes, cataract, inflammation of the cornea and increase in age related optical degeneration.
Avoid smoking and if you do then consider quitting as soon as possible. Apart from the other health related issues that smoking carries along with it also increases the risk of age related macular degeneration, retina swelling and hemorrhage and optic nerve disease. In most cases these conditions lead to permanent blindness. If you don’t smoke then avoid second hand smoke.
Eat a healthy diet and make sure that you have plenty of fruits and vegetables. Exercise daily and make sure that you have an annual eye examination done even if you can see properly and are not facing any problems.
