Healthy lips are soft and supple. They may not be rosy or pink but they definitely lack dead skin and flakes. The color of your lips depends on the melanin in your skin and that differs across skin tones. Your lips lack oil glands as a result there tend to get dry and have cracks on them. This can be quiet painful as well as looks unappealing and unhealthy.

When the skin on your lips begins to dry you must keep them well moisturized to prevent cracking. If the cracks on your lips are deep then there may be some amount of bleeding. In order to moisturize your lips you may use a moisturizing lip balm on your lips. Make sure that the lipsticks that you are using have a moisturizer as well as an SPF. You must use a lip balm for all the seasons of the year. If you are looking at natural remedies then you can use butter, clarified butter or the cream of the milk to moisturize your lips.

You must refrain from licking your lips. This will dry out the skin on your lips. When you lick your lips you get temporary relief, however, when the saliva evaporates it takes away the natural moisture from the skin as well.

If your lips have flaky skin then the worst thing you can do is to bite the skin off. This will cause the skin to tear and bleed profusely. Not only is that a bad habit but also causes huge discomfort and pain.

At night you must take utmost care of your lips. You can choose to use a lip balm of choice; however, the most effective remedy is petroleum jelly. It helps to lubricate your lips and keeps your lips moisturized through the night. Always make sure that your makeup is removed before you go to bed as they may be the agents that dry your skin.
