We all know what first-aid kits are. Thus, we must keep the first-aid material ready so that it can be used whenever the need arises. The location of the first-aid box in the house must be known to every member of the family. We never know when we or our dear ones will get injured or acquire illness. This period between the injury and doctor’s treatment is the most crucial for any patient. Several casualties take place during this period only. Hence, a little bit of first-aid knowledge is very important for every one of us. To help you in this regard, here are few common first-aid tips:

Cough and Cold
Consumption of cold liquid like water and juices must be increased. If there is sore throat, take throat lozenges as per the direction given on the label. For headache or pain, take Tylenol. If the condition doest not improve within 2-3 days, consult doctor.

Diarrhea
Complete liquid diet is a must. So, all the fat constituents and fried foods must be abandoned until the condition stables. Kaopectate or Immodium can be taken.

Nausea
Emetrol liquid can be taken as per instructions given on the label. Putting chips of ice or sipping weak tea or ginger ale every ten minutes helps to avoid vomiting tendency. If the above first-aid advice doesn’t cause further vomiting, then try clear soups, rice, applesauce or toasts for the next day. Avoid fatty and fried foods.

Insect Bites
First of all, apply ice on the area. If you can see the sting, remove it and apply antihistamine cream. If the bulge is intense, seek medical help.

Strains and Burns
Keep on icing the strained area on a regular basis for the next two days. Try to put on elastic bandage as compression helps to relieve the pain. If there is a minor burn, put cool water on the area. Spraying Benzocaine-contained antiseptic sprays can also provide relief for the time being. Applying toothpaste on the area also helps.

Bleeding
Minor cuts and scratches are common. First concern must be to stop the bleeding. Hold the area with towel by applying sufficient pressure. When the bleeding is stopped up, apply antibiotic cream and band-aid.

If there is anything related to heart or cardiac arrest, you can contact American Heart Assn. or the American Red Cross to get information on the first-aids called Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
