Sciatica is a common problem faced by many women. Sometimes this condition develops during pregnancy making it difficult for the woman to go about their chores normally. This problem occurs when there is pressure being exerted on the sciatic nerve or the nerve gets inflamed due to an injury.
The nerve runs along the lower back, legs and the feet. Its primary function is to ensure that there is feeling in the muscles of the feet and legs. Weakness in the legs, numbness or a tingling sensation in the legs could all be because of an injury caused to the sciatic nerve.
Sometimes you may even experience a tingling sensation in your legs while you are sitting in one position for a long time. This also occurs due to pressure which is being constantly exerted on the nerve which runs along the back of the legs. Pains experienced due to damage to the sciatic nerve are severe however there are a few things that you could do to help you reduce the pain especially if you are pregnant and are suffering from this condition.
The most important thing to do when you experience these sudden bots of pain when you are pregnant would be to wait the pain out. Though that would sound ridiculous let me explain the logic behind that. Sometimes the pain that you are feeling could be caused because the baby has moved inside you.
The movement of the baby inside you and its current position has caused the pressure and the sudden pain. Once the baby moves again the pressure would get released and the pain would disappear. The best thing that you can do if you realize that the baby has moved is to try and stay off your feet and apply heat to the affected area to relieve the pain.
While you are pregnant visit a physical therapist. Most hospitals and clinics have exercise classes for pregnant women. These classes are beneficial as they help you feel better about yourself while preparing you physically and mentally for labor and delivery. Exercise is also beneficial as it helps to relieve discomfort and pressure caused due to pregnancy back pain.
