We all have experienced a muscle strain once in their lifetime. It is commonly referred to as a muscle tear or pull. If not cared for well it can lead to prolonged damage or permanent damage to the body. If you subject your body to constant pressure due to work or pleasure then you run a greater risk of a strain. A strain will occur when you push your muscles beyond the limit that they can stretch. Once you strain your muscles you need to follow a four step program to treat it.
Start with rest. This is the best treatment that you can offer your body. Make sure that the part of the body gets plenty of rest. This will ensure that you prevent further stain to the area and ensure that the muscles are able to heal themselves. This is preventive measure as well as a cure.
The next thing that you need to do is to apply plenty of ice on the affected area. The ice will helps to reduce the swelling and any blood loss that may occur as a result of the strain. Apply ice every 2 to 3 hours for twenty minute stretches. Rub the ice in circular motions; avoid placing the ice pack on the area and leaving it there. This will lead to heat formation in the area internally. Make sure that you do not apply ice on any broken or bruised skin.
You also need to compress the area. This can be done by using an elastic bandage or wrapping the part of the body in surgical crepe. This helps to ease the stress of the joint and the muscles.
The last thing that you need to do to prevent damage and ensure that the muscles heal is to elevate the part of the body higher than the level of your heart. This helps to minimize the swelling in the area.
Once the swelling has reduced you must start massaging the area with warm oil. This will helps to increase blood circulation in the area and quicken the recovery process. You may also use electrotherapy to reduce swelling and pain if the injury is extremely severe.
