How To Prevent Hangnails

Hangnails are formed when the nails are not cared for and the skin around the nail becomes rough and dry. In order to prevent or cure this problem you must take care of your hands and nails and pay attention to the skin surrounding the nails.

Getting regular manicures help to strengthen your nails. If you are unable to get a manicure at the parlor then you must take the necessary care at home to prevent hangnails from forming. To get a manicure at home start with soaking your nails in warm water with soap for a few minutes.

After the skin around your nail has softened you must brush them lightly in circular motions to clean the nails. After this push the cuticles back gently but avoid causing damage to the nail bed.

Throughout the day you must use a moisturizer on your hands. Every time you wash your hand you must use a moisturizing lotion to soften the skin. At night you must use a cuticle cream. This helps to strengthen your nails.

If your nails are rough and the skin around the nail is dry then you must use an exfoliating scrub to get rid of the dry skin on your hands. This helps to get rid of dead skin cells and helps in skin regeneration.

When you are doing household chores like washing dishes or gardening or when you are hands are immersed in water you must use protective gloves. Do not expose your hands to too much water as hot water and detergent soaps can dry your skin and cause your nails to become brittle. If this happens then your nails are at higher risk of breaking and chipping.

If you are in the habit of biting you nails then you must resist the urge to do so. If you suffer from hangnails and you bite them it may bleed. To stop biting your nails you can either cut them short so that there is noting to bite into or use a protective nail polish coat on your nails.

There are also several bitter tasting formulas that help to prevent nail biting. Apply a generous amount of the solution on your nails and the surrounding areas for best results.
