Motion sickness is common to children in the age group of 3 to 6. This happens when the brain gets conflicting messages from the eyes and the ears. When you are moving in the car; your child may see the moving objects but feels that he or she is still stationary. This causes conflict in the brain and ends to upset feelings.
When you are traveling in a car; strap your children in so that they are not moving around in the car. Close the side windows and cover them with curtains to avoid children looking outside. If your child insists on looking out then make them look through the front windshield rather than the side windows. Make them sit in the middle of the back seat so that they can get a clear view outside.
Keep the child busy with a small hand toy or puzzle. Avoid reading and activities like coloring as it can make the child dizzy and cause them to throw up.
Make sure to give the child a light snack rather than a heavy meal before getting into the car. Avoid loading up on liquids especially if you anticipate a long road trip as the liquids will make the children uneasy and may lead to them throwing up. If the child must have a drink then ginger ale is a good option as it takes care of any uneasiness that the child might experience.
Before getting into the vehicle, mix a spoon of honey with powdered ginger and eat it in one gulp. This will help to get rid of any uneasiness that you or your child may suffer from.
Always keep plastic bags in the car and close to your child so that they may use them just in case they begin to feel uneasy.
As far as possible keep the windows open for fresh air.
