How to Prevent Pollen Allergies in Infants

August 17, 2009

As we progress in life we seem to have deteriorating health. Allergies are becoming a common problem and can be developed at any point in time. Unfortunately, infants are at highest risk of developing these allergies and this is very distressing to the child and the parent alike. If the child suffers from an allergy that hampers his breathing then it has an affect on the quality of life. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent these allergies in infants. If respiratory diseases and allergies run in the family then the child has a greater risk of contracting the allergy.

The best method of prevention is to breast feed the child for a year. This will do wonders for the child’s development as breast milk is the best source of nutrients and minerals for the child. It is the best way to boost the child’s immune system and enhance his health. The milk is loaded with antibodies and white blood cells that help the child to ward of diseases and viruses. Research has proved that breast fed babies have lower risk of allergies than babies that are not breast fed.

Do not let the baby be around smoke. Second hand smoke will corrode the child’s lungs and hamper his development. The child must breathe fresh air. If you are breast feeding then you must avoid smoking. Do not let others smoke in the same room as the baby. This will ensure that the child’s lungs are not infected in any way.

You need to be very careful about the child’s diet. Introduce the right foods at the right time. Vegetable must be the first solid food that the child is given, followed by fruits and then lentils. Feed the child the same food for a week in order for them to form a liking and taste for that food. In this way you ensure that the child is familiar with the food.

Introduce probiotic supplements in the child’s diet after 6 months. If you are breast feeding then this will happen automatically; however if you are not then you must ensure that you speak to the doctor about the best supplements for the child.

Make sure that there is an air purifier in the nursery or the room that the child sleeps in. this reduces the risk of allergies and respiratory diseases as the purifier removes all pollutants from the air.
