Many old men suffer from nocturia, which is a very troublesome and irritating problem. This is caused due to contraction of the urinary bladder and decrease in the capacity and ability to hold urine. Nocturia may get aggravated due to diabetes and prostrate gland problems. Here are certain methods that could help trace the reason for nocturia and effect a cure for it.
It is normal for most men above the age of 70 to visit the toilet two to three times at night to pass urine. Due to contraction of the urinary bladder and inability to hold urine it is quite natural. Besides residual remains of some urine in the urinary bladder may create a feeling in them to go often to micturate. If those men also suffer from diabetes it causes polyuria which causes a person to pass urine several times in the daytime also. Besides it would be best to check up if these men suffer from prostrate gland problems too.
Prostate gland problems like enlargement of the prostate gland may lead to some obstruction of the flow of urine and may in cases lead to a residue of urine being left in the urinary bladder. This may require a surgery where the enlargement of the prostrate gland is cut or scraped to promote better flow of urine. This surgery may be done when the skin is cut and the enlargement is removed. However in cases when it is not possible to have an open surgery a Trans-Urethral Resection of Prostrate or the scraping of the prostrate gland is carried on. In the latter case there are chances of the obstruction developing again in the future also.
A visit to a urologist can help one find out if there is a recurrence of enlargement of the prostrate gland. Tests like a sonography and uroflowmetry can help detect the cause of nocturia. There are however medicines that can be prescribed to treat nocturia. So dear senior citizen men do not fear nocturia as there are ways and means to find out the cause and treat it by medicines and surgery.
