How to Use Essential Oils in the Treatment of Dandruff

June 10, 2009

One would find it difficult to believe that the oils that are use d in aromatherapy can be beneficial in the treatment of dandruff. It is not uncommon for a person to suffer from dandruff and try several topical treatments in the attempt to rid the flakes. One must remember that essential oils when used in a massage with the help of base oils help to combat the pesky dandruff.

You have a choice of 3 oils to choose from. Rosemary, tea tree and thyme are the most powerful oils in helping to get rid of dandruff. When choosing an oil; keep your allergies in mind and also keep your preferences in mind.

Choose base oil to blend the essential oil in. Choose from coconut oil, almond or sesame oil. Apricot, kernel and jojoba oils are equally effective and they are the ones used in most commercial hair oils.

When blending your oil you must do so in the ration of 1: 10. 1 ml of essential oil for every 10 ml of your base oil is the best portion mix to benefit your scalp.

Before you begin you must wash your hair as you normally would. Skip the conditioner though. Let you hair dry naturally and when it does then warm the oil blend and massage it gently into your scalp. Your focus needs to be the scalp and not the strands of your hair. You can choose to dip a cotton ball in the oil and then run it through your scalp and follow up with a massage. Massage in circular motions to increase the blood flow and then tie up your hair and let the oils penetrate into the scalp. Dip a towel in hot water and then wring out the excess water. Place the towel on your hair so that the steam from the towel can enter into your hair and scalp thereby helping to soften the scalp. Repeat this step several times.

If possible keep the oils on your head over night; and wash it off in the morning. You will notice lesser flakes for the next few days. Repeat this massage a few times a week and you will be flake free in a month.
