How You Can Get Over Fears Naturally
April 20, 2009
Most of us have fears of one kind or the other; some of them are crippling hindering carrying on of life itself and others more simple which are easy to overcome with passage of time. But as it is said do not fear fear itself but find ways to overcome it; it is in your hands only to overcome fear and others could only help you.
There are fears that figure out through great trauma, which may require the help of a psychologist or psychiatrist. But ordinary fears, which may at times even be irrational have to be tackled by us only. You need to break from your comfort zone and try to overcome it naturally.
You can get over fear by asking yourself whether you should fear or not fear. Evaluate the benefits of doing it and disadvantages. Like if you are frightened of water and do not want to learn swimming, just think over the advantages and disadvantages of learning to swim. You would easily figure out learning swimming is to your advantage. By learning swimming you could swim during summer, save yourself if you fell in water and could do it as an exercise to keep healthy. The only disadvantage I could figure is that your not going near water which you fear. I am sure this would convince you that your fear is not good and you will overcome it naturally.
You could do the thing you fear with a friend first to overcome the fear. You could first visualize yourself doing it. I know of a friend of mine who preferred climbing the steps to using an elevator because once she was trapped in an elevator. Climbing the stairs is good for health but it was irrational to think she would always be trapped in an elevator. Then she took one of her friends and went up one floor at a time, visualizing she would be safe. After a few times she found she was irrational and started using the elevator. She got over fear the most natural way.
Believe me, fear cripples our progress in life. I know of intelligent and educated people who never progressed in life, because they feared a fall. As It has been well said,” It is better to fall and rise again than to never fall at all”.Take the example of a child. If the child had the fear of falling and the mother also thought so, no child would have stood in or walked. Venturing into the unknown is better than sitting comfortable in a chair fearing a fall. This is not to mean that you should be a daredevil. However, it is better to get over fear and take the first step to the thousand miles.
To conclude, I am sure all of us can overcome fear naturally by making a few changes in our thoughts and beliefs. Do not fear anything but accept things as they are instead of allowing fear to rule our lives.
