When my daughter was born the doctor recommend that she be bathed in the early morning sun in order to make their bones strong. I wondered if that were really necessary since she was born in summer. Wasn’t the heat enough? I wasn’t very keen on the idea till he explained that the Vitamin D absorbed by the human body from the sun makes bones stronger.

So I adhered to his recommendation. The sunlight increases the production of serotonin which is a chemical that elevates your mood. The visible light from the sun lifts your mood hence it is not necessary that you bathe in the sun. You receive this light even when you are indoors. If you lack Vitamin D in your system then you can use a UV filtered light box in your house. This is generally recommended by doctors; however you should consult your doctor before doing any such thing.

This however is not true for adults. Adults do not necessarily need to bathe in the sun in order to acquire Vitamin D. We are already exposed to the sun with our daily chores and lifestyle. While driving, walking, getting out of your car you already get the required amount of sun that you need. Approximately 20 to 30 minutes of sun exposure does the trick. However, if you do feel like bathing in the sun please make sure that you protect yourself well. Always wear a hat and sunglasses and sunscreen of SPF 30.

In the case of sunburn there are a few home remedies to take your pain away. Firstly do not rub the area that is affected. Use only cold water to wash the area. Use a moisturizer like Aloe Vera to sooth the area. Wearing only cotton clothes will help as cotton is a natural fabric; it is light and allows for the skin to breathe.
