Gonorrhea is a widespread sexually transmitted disease (STD) that concerns both men as well as women. Only US has reported over 600,000 new gonorrhea infections in a year and there are chances of many unreported cases. This disease can prove to be a fatal one if left untreated. Gonorrhea symptoms are caused by Neisseria gonorrhea bacteria. It grows and spreads in warm moist reproductive parts and organs like cervix, urethra and the fallopian tube of women. This bacterium is also found in eyes, throat, rectum and penis.
Identify Gonorrhea symptoms:
Men with gonorrhea sometimes do not have any symptoms at all while others have some signs or symptoms that appear after five days of infection. For some individuals symptoms might even take a month to appear. Intense burning sensation during urination, pus-like yellow or green discharge from the tip of penis, blood in urine, frequent urination, swelling of the glands in the groin, red heads of the penis etc are some of the gonorrhea symptoms of men.
Symptoms of genital gonorrhea differ in men and women. The symptoms of gonorrhea among women often go unnoticed and are often mistaken for a vaginal or bladder infection. Abnormal bleeding, increased vaginal discharge, burning sensation during urination, general irritation of the outer area of vagina etc are some symptoms of gonorrhea infection.
Both men and women experience the same symptom when there is anus infection. These include discharge, soreness, itching, bleeding and pain when going to toilet.
Since gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease, it is always important to know something about the partner’s sexual activity and to make sure that the partner has had no infection before. Use of condoms can prove to be an effective way of protecting from the disease and other sexually transmitted diseases.
However, there are several drugs that are used for treating gonorrhea. Since individuals having gonorrhea are prone to another STD Chlamydia, hence antibiotics for both infections are given together. Although drugs can stop the further advancement of the infection, it cannot reverse any permanent damage done.
