Calcium is a mineral that the body requires to maintain its health. Most people believe that only the bones and teeth need calcium; however that is not true. There are several other parts of the body that require calcium in order to function well.

There are several natural sources of calcium; spinach, milk, cheese, yogurt and dairy products are a high in calcium content. If you are unable to get the required dose of calcium from the food you eat then you need to take it in the form of supplements.

Let’s start with the importance of calcium for bones and teeth. Both these parts of the body are made up of calcium and hence it is important to maintain your body’s calcium requirements. Eating the appropriate amount of calcium will help to prevent osteoporosis, and also strengthens the bones in order to prevent fractures and bone diseases.

Calcium can be used to fight high blood pressure or hypertension. If you are able to prevent hypertension you will be able to fight heart and kidney failures; thus calcium is extremely beneficial to ones health.

Research conducted to study the benefits of calcium in the body claim that this mineral helps to maintain the health of the colon and prevents the formation of tumors.

Women who suffer from PMS much eat calcium fortified foods as the mineral helps to get rid of the depression, anxiety and cramps.

Calcium also acts as an aid for weight loss. Maintaining a calcium dense diet will help to shed a few pounds; all you need to do is make a few changes in your diet. You can add a handful of almonds to your ice cream topping or drink a glass of milk before bed every night.

Snack on foods like cheese and yogurt and add fish to your main meals. If you are eating a calcium rich diet in order to loose weight you must ensure that you have all non fat dairy products and bake your calcium rich meats rather than frying them.
