Indigestion: Causes and Treatment

Various symptoms arising after eating are combined referred as to indigestion. The symptoms include a feeling of fullness, discomfort and pain in upper abdomen. The reason for indigestion may be over eating, eating very quickly and consumption of some specific or unhealthy type of food. Indigestion if not treated in time can lead to the health disorders like inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, peptic ulcer, stomach cancer, gastritis, etc.

Apart from abdominal pain, the other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, bloating, heartburn, acid reflux etc. The flow of digestive juices gets reduced when we eat very quickly. Hence, chewing the food properly and slowly while eating can avoid indigestion. When we eat slowly, the food mixes with digestive enzymes. Overeating is also a factor leading to indigestion. Overeating increases the chances of acid reflux. Eating certain foods, such as wheat floor or milk, to which you may be sensitive can also lead to the problem of indigestion.

Drinking excessive amount of carbonated drink, strong tea and coffee and eating unripe fruits can also lead to the problem of indigestion. Never go for a physical exercise soon after taking a meal. Physical activity diverts blood from the digestive system to the muscles you are using. Smoking is also a factor responsible for indigestion. Various chemicals present in tobacco affect human health in many ways.

Take you meal at least two hour before you go to bed. A balance diet rich in vitamins is always desirable for a good health. Your food should contain iron, zinc and various vitamins like A, B and C. If you are sensitive to some particular food, don’t eat that food. Drink little water while taking the meal. Avoid combination of particular food which encourages indigestion.

Consumption of cabbage, apples and carrots is good for the prevention and treatment of indigestion. The antacid properties of these vegetable and fruits are very effective in treatment of indigestion. You can take these on a regular basis. Sage is very helpful in avoiding indigestion. Take a cup of boiling water, add two spoonful of sage, take this twice a day. If the symptoms are persistent , you should consult a doctor for medical help.
