Ingrown toenail is a sore and aching state of the toe where the toenail is bent and matures into the skin normally at the border of the nails. The area where the toenail bent down into the skin is usually red, warm, swollen and irritated and if it is left untreated, it can develop into infection.
Ingrown toenail is usually caused from uneven and improper cutting of toenails, frequent wearing of high heels, wearing of tight fitting shoes, injury to the nail bed, wearing of poor fitting shoes etc. Some ingrown toenails are chronic in nature and in such cases the individuals suffering from it face repeated episodes of soreness and infectivity.
There are some cases where the ingrown toenails run in families. Ingrown toenails are widespread among the adults while it is uncommon among the toddlers and the kids. However there are a lot of ways by which ingrown toenails can be treated and here are some of them:
Take a basin full of water and warm it. Now add one to two teaspoonful of Epsom salts in the water and mix it. Now put the feet inside the water and soak the sore toe for a minimum of ten minutes. Take out the feet and dry it with the help of a towel. This procedure needs to be conducted at least twice to thrice daily in order the get the necessary relieve from the pain.
Trimming Of Nails
One needs to be more cautious when it comes to trimming of nails. The individuals need to cut the nails straight from corner to corner so as to avoid the risk of ingrown nails. However, if the corners appear excessively sharp, they need to be filed down a little. The toenails should not be cut too short as it has chances of digging into the skin when it grows.
Proper fitting shoes
Improper shoe size and poor fitting shoes are some of the important causes of ingrown nails. Hence, if the problem has been caused from the shoes, the best would be to buy a new set of shoes that fits better and do not pinch the toes.
