Itching of eyes is a common symptom. Everyone must have experienced itching of eyes at least once. If you frequently suffer from itchy eyes, then you should know the causes of itchy eyes.

Itchy eyes can be caused due to vitamin deficiency, dry eye syndrome, blepharitis, conjunctivitis or even any allergy. Vitamin deficiency like B12 deficiency and vitamin A deficiency can lead to itching of eyes. Dry eye syndrome is an eye disease.There is decreased production of tears resulting in drying of eyes. This causes eye irritation, foreign body sensation in eyes. The affected person feels like scratching eyes continuously due to itching. Scratching further aggravates the problem.

Blepharitis is a disease of eye in which there is itching of the margins of the eyelid. It is usually caused due to dandruff formation in the lid hairs. Also it can be caused due to bacterial and parasitic infection. These infections results in inflammation of the lids of margin which can cause severe itching of the eye margin.


Itchy eyes can also be due to wearing lens for longer duration than advised. Good care of eye lenses and not wearing lens for longer duration is advised. Putting rose water in eyes at bedtime also helps to give relief to tired eyes.Conjunctivitis is an acute infection and a contagious disease and spreads from one person to another. It is another cause responsible for itching of eyes. Itching of eyes is associated with redness, watering and swelling of eyes. Sometimes fever is also present.

Another disease called sjogren’s syndrome can also cause itchy eyes. It is a serious disease in which there is dryness of all mucous membranes. It is an autoimmune disease with no specific cause.


For treatment of itchy eyes, first the cause of itchy eyes should be determined. If there is deficiency of vitamin B12 and A, green leafy vegetables, carrots, fruits, meat, liver, eggs should be included in diet.


In dry eye syndrome, the eyes should be kept moist with artificial tear drops. Any infection giving rise to blepharitis or conjunctivitis should be treated. For diseases like sjogren’s syndrome, a visit to a ophthalmologist is a must.
