Gingivitis is disease of gum in which inflammation is caused by bacteria. We experience irritation in our gums due to gingivitis. Generally, there a short gap between gums and our tooth and bacterial plaque gets deposited in this gap and causes inflammation of gums. The deposition of plaque varies depending upon the shape and size of your teeth and gums.
In some cases, the deposition is microscopic level. In long term the gingivitis may widen the gap between teeth and gums and hence increases the chances of accumulation of bacterial plaque. Consequently the problem of gingivitis increases. In some cases a loss of bone around the teeth may also observed due to severe impact of gingivitis. In a long term the problem becomes more complicated as due to bone loss the teeth become loose and ultimately fall down. In rare cases the inflammation caused by gingivitis may enter into the body and the problem can become dreaded.
Mouth sores and swelling in gums are the common symptoms of gingivitis. Other symptoms include bad breath, red or purple colored gums, itching gums, pus emitting gums, bleeding gums etc. In case you find any of these symptoms in you, you should consult a dentist for diagnosis. The dentist may examine and remove bacterial plaque accumulated in the gaps.
