Knee tendonitis is the condition that disturbs the tendons of the knee joint. The knee joint consists of thigh bones and leg bones accompanied by many tendons and muscles. The word tendonitis point to the inflammation in the tendons. The tendons and other structures of the knee joint frequently get worn out.
The normal usage of knee joints is observed higher in people associated with athletics and other sports activities like football, rowing and rugby. If the knee is overused, the tendons will become swollen involving the extensive use of the knee or trauma at knee joint. The injuries of the knee are usually observed in people associated with various kinds of sports.
What is Knee Tendonitis?
The different types of knee tendonitis involve patellar tendonitis, quadriceps tendonitis and ilio-tibial band friction syndrome. Patellar tendonitis is the common type of tendonitis affecting the knee and is known as knee tendonitis in some instances. The other name commonly used to refer patellar tendonitis is jumper’s knee.
The activities such as jumping, other movements of the legs and running will put lot of pressure on the knees which result in knee tendonitis. These pressures on the knee will lead to small tears which will get enhanced as time passes and ultimately end up in tendon swelling. Knee tendonitis is also observed in disease conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis which is referred by multiple joint inflammation in the body.
Possible Causes Of Knee Tendonitis
Aging usually influences the body functioning and also plays a role in the cause of knee tendonitis. Knee tendonitis is mostly observed in people who have immature muscles in the knee. Injury to the knee if the person falls or improper extension of the knee joint will lead to knee tendonitis.
Symptoms Of Knee Tendonitis
Inflammation Of Tendon
The symptom specificity and seriousness of knee tendonitis is dependent on the extent of inflammation present in the tendon and the tendon type that is injured. The main symptom that is observed in knee tendonitis is pain. The injury extent influences the pain severity.
Mild To Severe Knee Pain
If the condition is mild, then the pain might have occurred due to the person’s involvement in brisk walk and other sports accomplishments. If the condition is moderate or severe, pain might have originated from certain activities like running. If the pain is very severe then it might cease the person from moving the knee that is injured.
The knee joint that is problematic or painful and is also swollen are the forms of the injured knee joint. The pain in the knee is also observed in old people who climb up stairs and climb down stairs.
Treatment Of Knee Tendonitis
There are many treatment choices available for knee tendonitis which extend from usage of medications till knee joint surgery. The treatment is chosen depending on the extent of injury to the knee tendons. Some tests are performed like physical examination depending on the symptoms that are observed.
These tests will help in diagnosing the knee tendonitis. Some more investigations like ultrasonography, advanced imaging techniques and MRI scans are suggested if there is any serious injury or to confirm if there is no condition associated with the knee.
For mild pain due to knee tendonitis, physiotherapy constituting particular exercises for making the muscles and tendons stronger are suggested. Exercises related to stretching and squatting are recommended to improve the functioning of the knee and to make it stronger.
The management of mild to moderate pain is done by splinting the knee to control the knee joint movement. Steroids are given in case the splitting does not work.
The severe condition of knee tendonitis will need a surgery to be performed. The patient is advised to rest for a few weeks and then carryout physiotherapy to allow the patient to come to his or her normal condition after the surgery.
