When you have infrequent bowel movements you get constipated. If you have less than 3 bowel movements in the week then you are constipated. In this case the stools are dry and hard and you have difficulty in eliminating the waste from your body. This may lead to bloating. Most pregnant women suffer from constipation due to the heavy doses of iron in the prenatal vitamins. Infants also show signs of constipation when they move from breast milk to formula milk.
Relief for infants
If your infant is constipated then they are bound to be uncomfortable. You need to give the child a natural stool softener in order to help the child to eliminate the waste from the body. You can try apple juice or mashed bananas. Do not use any medications to soften the stools as it may hamper the child. If the child is over 4 months then you can offer the child foods that are rich in fiber. Some of these foods are peaches, bananas, apples, peas and spinach. You can also give the child a warm bath and then massage the child’s tummy with oil. Use circular movements to massage the child; this will ensure that the child is able to get rid of the waste from the body.
Relief for pregnant women
As stated earlier, prenatal vitamins can cause some degree of constipation. In order to prevent any constipation you need to exercise daily and drink plenty of water. Eat plenty of fruits, whole grains, leafy vegetables and cereals. Drink plenty of juices and stay away from caffeine based drinks.
If you get constipated regularly then you are not eating a balanced diet. You need to include plenty of green vegetables in your diet; this includes broccoli, spinach, peas and chick peas. These foods will help to relieve constipation. You could be constipated due to dehydration or excess amounts of caffeine in your body. In order to take care of this you need to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water daily. Start the day with warm water and honey and keep sipping water throughout the day.
