George Clooney or Judi Dench might flaunt their gray’s in style but you’ve got to agree that not all of us can accept graying with that much of ease. I remember the look on my aunt’s face when someone told her “Julie you’ve got a grey hair“.
She was flabbergasted as if someone had dropped a bomb on her house! At that moment I did not understand what all the fuss was about till recently my mom too joined the “Please God! Food is something that we take in everyday, I mean you don’t even have to remember it. I told my aunt and mom about some foods that could help them in their endeavor.
Green leafy vegetables were first on my list. Green vegetables are a good source of vitamin B complex especially B6 and B12. These assist in the production of the hormone that affects hair color.
Graying is a consequence of the aging process. Antioxidants can effectively prevent the early onset of the aging phase thereby preventing grays.
Fruits like strawberries, blackberries, orange, grapefruit, melons, tomatoes and raspberries must be taken daily.
Selenium Enriched Food
Intake of selenium enriched foods can fight graying. Selenium is a vital constituent of hormones that are related to aging as well as graying processes in the body. A daily intake of selenium enriched foods like salmon, tuna, walnuts, almonds, raisins and sunflower seeds is highly recommended.
Include more lean meat or soy products in your diet. Proteins are essential for maintaining healthy hair.
Practice Relaxation Techniques
They say too much of stress and tension can make your look old, and you know what? They are (whoever they are) absolutely correct! Psychologists also agree to the fact that a person who takes too much of stress experiences an acceleration in his/her aging and graying process.
If you’ve had a stressful day, come back home and relax. Do what you love and enjoy doing. Give yourself some time to rewind. You may also try some meditation and aromatherapy. My mom loved taking some hot water baths, which she said “washed away her tensions”. You may also try stress busting exercises or yoga therapy to help relax the mind.
Dermatologists believe that staying hydrated can also help you combat those silver locks. The hair follicles may suffer from dehydration and lack of essential nutrition which may turn the hair gray. So keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water and juices. Stay away from soft-drinks, alcohol or coffee, they may look like liquids but they actually cause dehydration!
Gourd is known to provide health and strength to the hair roots and restore the hair pigment which is responsible for the color. Take small piece of ribbed gourd and soak them in oil for 48 hours. Gently heat the oil till the pieces are charred. Let the oil cool and then store it in an airtight container. Apply this oil regularly and wash off with herbal shampoo.
Yogurt And Pepper
This is one the best Ayurvedic treatments for gray hair.In a cup of yogurt add 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice.
Apply this regularly on your hair and scalp. Wash off when dry. Black pepepr helps in darkening the hair and yogurt gives you healthy, lustrous hair.
The leaves contain essential minerals that fights gray. Put some fresh curry leaves in some oil (coconut, almond, olive). Heat them together till the leaves turn black. Let the oil cool down and gently massage your hair with it. Wash off with some mild shampoo
Make a paste of some fresh onions and apply it all over the head. Apply this 15minutes before bath. If done regularly you’ll notice that your grey hair is getting back its original color.
