The nervous system is the primary organ of the body which helps all the other organs of the body function in harmony. If the nervous system gets damaged then the damage is irreversible. Damage to the nervous system could also lead to permanent disability or even death. It is therefore important that we maintain our nervous system in order to stay fit and healthy.
Vitamin B-12 also know as cobalamin is essential for the growth of red blood cells and the maintenance of the nervous system. It can be found naturally in foods such as dairy products, meats and eggs. Your diet should therefore essentially include these types of foods. Some studies have shown that vitamin B-12 is also present in soy food products and so beans however the form of vitamin B-12 is such that it cannot be absorbed by the human body. Vitamin B-12 is also important for the formation and propagation of DNA during cell division and deficiency leads to weaker dna and anemia. Anemia requires that the blood be replaced and is not only a painful process but also a very expensive one.
Generally when there is a deficiency problem it is due to the body not being able to absorb the vitamin B-12 that has been synthesized rather than a lack of it. People who are meat eaters normally do not have to be worried about vitamin B-12 deficiency however vegetarians need to be a little cautious. It is advisable for them to have a half pint of milk, two eggs or two slices of cheese. This would help ensure that they are getting the required amount of the vitamin. One should also avoid taking vitamin B-12 supplements in the form of capsules or pills as research has shown that they can possibly increase the risk of deficiency as the body cannot absorb them.
