Sailing or going on a cruise holiday sounds exciting to most of us, except for an unfortunate few, who feel queasy even at the thought of a boat or a ship. If you are someone, who always needs to sit with a bag at the rear end of the boat when the rest of your friends are enjoying the breeze and the boat ride, here are a few tips that can help you.
Sea sickness is another type of motion sickness and gives you the same uneasy feeling like when you are on a roller coaster in an amusement park or driving on a winding road. This usually happens due to an imbalance in the inner ear fluid and the signals going to the brain.
There are pills available which can help you avoid the uneasy feeling. Ask your doctor if he can prescribe any to you.
Apart from taking pills, there are foods that can also help you. Most people make the mistake of skipping meals before going on board. This can actually make you feel worse.
Eat light meals at least 30 to 40 mins before going on board. Avoid eating foods like eggs, bacon, milk products and citrus juices. Try eating tropical fruits instead.
When the sea vessel begins to move, keep sucking on a candy, as the mouth movement helps in balancing the inner ear fluid.
Ginger is also proven to help sea sickness. Drinking ginger ale instead of a fruit juice will help or look for ginger candy. Make sure to keep sipping on water.
Try not to keep staring at an object that appears to be stationary. Keep your eyes shut for a few minutes. If possible, sit down and listen to music. Don’t sit facing backwards.
It is important that you keep your mind occupied, look far into the horizon, but don’t fix your gaze at one point. Avoid reading as this will make it worse.
Look for special wrist bands that are available at medical stores. These are specially made to relieve any kind of motion sickness.
Similarly, sea sickness patches are also available. These need to be stuck on the skin and help provide relief.
