Natural Ways To Prevent And Stop Infant Colic

When your baby cries uncontrollably and for no reason he is suffering from infant colic. This is very normal and happens to every baby in the first few weeks. There is no strong evidence found yet about the causes of colic, however some studies say it could be due to excess gas or the baby being very sensitive to weather or climatic changes. This can be overwhelming if you are a young parent or it is your first child.

There are a few things that you could actually do to calm your baby. The most important, as you might already know, is burping the baby after feeding. Hold the baby upright over your shoulder and gently rub his/her back with your palm. This is important because a baby is almost always lying down flat on the back in the first few months and requires help to even turn over. This causes the gas to stay trapped inside and cause stomach ache. When the baby is awake or uncomfortable hold the baby and move around, try rocking the baby or gently swaying him/ her from side to side. These movements help the baby to be mobile and the motion can also soothe and calm the baby.

Some studies also say that probiotics can also help colic. What is probiotics? Simply put, these are good bacteria that are essential in the body to kill any bad bacteria. A baby’s intestines are still developing and can be very sensitive. Probiotics help improve the health of a baby overall. They are naturally found in breast milk. Try breast feeding as opposed to formula.

There are some homeopathic remedies that can also help, check with your doctor for further advice on this. Gripe water is a special formula made for babies and has been used for centuries in Europe and India. Gripe water helps soothe the baby’s stomach from gas or any other discomfort. Again, please consult your doctor before using any products that have to be given orally.

Try dry roasting a few carom/thyme seeds, pack in a think soft cloth. Put this against your skin to check the temperature, if it is comfortable put this on the baby’s stomach and gently give a hot compress. This also helps ease any kind of stomach ache in a baby.
