The human body is made to have alternate periods of work and rest. Besides the amount of rest or sleep needed by different people also varies and fatigue may also lower our resistance to diseases. If you are not getting enough sleep and feeling tired it doesn’t mean you can just take some vitamins and good nutrition to feel good and fresh again. Believe me, it is your body that needs rest and it is time to act now. The first step to take if you are not getting enough sleep is to find out for yourself the amount of sleep you require for being physically and mentally active. Start by setting aside eight to nine hours for sleep. Vary the time and decrease or increase it every two to three days to figure out the exact number of sleep you require, you should feel good and energized after a good night’s sleep.
Once you have set the number of hours you have to sleep each day to get enough sleep there may be times when you feel extra tired and irritable and crave for some extra rest. You could allot half of an hour extra rest on Saturdays and Sundays and take a short nap after lunch to compensate for the lost sleep.
Some of us feel we are not getting enough sleep because we toss and turn in bed and have tensed thoughts at night. This is the appropriate time and do act now and avoid listening to the late night news. Besides reading philosophical books just before retiring to bed helps one to get peaceful and enough sleep. Avoiding tensed arguments with family members, seeing a violent movie just before retiring to bed can also be avoided. Doing relaxing exercises and meditation and using aromatic oils of sandalwood, lavender and vetiver also help one to relax and not miss on getting enough sleep.
