Nutrition for Diabetics

Diabetes is a life threatening disease that has the ability to affect every part of the human body. It is a chronic disease where the body is unable to convert sugar into energy. If your sugar levels are above normal then you are at risk of kidney failure and heart attacks. High blood pressure and cholesterol are also some other side effects of the illness. Unfortunately, diabetes is hereditary so there is little one can do to prevent it if it is already in your blood line. However, controlling the sugar levels by means of a diet is easy and effective.

If you are diabetic then you need to be extremely active. Physical activity takes you a long way, walking briskly daily can reduce your sugar count and help you to control your levels of sugar. You must visit a doctor and take advice from a dietician about the best foods for your body. Learn to monitor your sugar levels and do so regularly.

As a diabetic you must eat a variety of foods. Switching to a vegetarian diet will be beneficial. Your body needs to have high amounts of fiber, minerals and vitamins in addition to carbohydrates and protein. You can get all these nutrients form green leafy vegetables and brown rice and oats. Reduce the amount of sugar and salt you consume. If you are fond of sweets then you can eat fruits to substitute your cravings. Also fruits are a rich source of anti oxidants and they help to protect your body against the disease and also help to maintain your nutritional levels. Avoid eating refined sugar and keep salt to a minimum.

Always maintain a healthy weight as obesity makes diabetes even more difficult to live with. Check your weight regularly and make sure that you maintain your cholesterol levels.
