Nutritional and Health Benefits of Broccoli

I always had taste buds for things that most people would resent eating. I remember chomping on sprigs of broccoli and relishing it whilst my siblings were getting yelled at for not eating their share. I always wondered what was so unappealing about this vegetable that most people found repulsive. Till this date I wonder why people do not like this vegetable when it is laden with all the nutrients and goodness that your body requires. If you are one of those people who are not fond of this vegetable then what I have to tell you may be of some interest to you and you may change your mind about how often you eat this vegetable.

Broccoli is a vegetable that is extremely low in calories. As a matter of fact a cup of the vegetable is 20 to 30 calories. And even in these small doses it is packed with vitamins and minerals that are extremely beneficial to your body. A serving of broccoli will give you approximately 2% of your recommended dietary requirement of carbohydrates. It is not a great source of protein though it is very valuable in terms of Vitamins.

Broccoli is a rich source of Vitamin C; a single serving will give you more than 200% of your daily requirement of vitamin C. It is also a good source of Vitamin K; the vitamin that helps to protect your bones and prevent any bones related diseases. It also promotes the health of your eyes since it is a good source of Vitamin A; it protects the eye from any damage to the retina.

Foliate or Vitamin B9 is also prevalent in the vegetable and this takes care of your skin and muscles thereby ensuring muscular and skin cellular growth.

The sprouts are also great for your heart as it adds Omega 3 fatty acids to your body. Thus you stand to gain a lot from eating the vegetable regularly.

In addition to all these benefits that the vegetable offers you must also note that recent research has proved that the vegetable is linked to the prevention and cure of cancer of the breast and prostate.
