It is obvious that the best way to prevent a food allergy is to avoid consuming the food all together. However there are times when you are unaware of the ingredients of your food and this causes the allergic reaction. In order to avoid this you must make it a point to read the labels of the food that you buy. Take some time when you are at the super market to read the labels before you drop something into your basket. It may take you longer to complete your shopping but the effort will be worth your while. If the foods that you intend buying do not have the ingredients mentioned; it would be better if you avoid buying it.
When you are eating out at a restaurant always ask about the ingredients used. You can also specify the food items to be avoided and make sure that you mention all the items you are allergic to.
If you have had an allergic reaction before then there are chances that you have an emergency kit with you with an antihistamine injection in it. Make sure that you carry the kit with you at all times. Remember, that it is extremely dangerous to under estimate the effects of an allergic reaction and if you suffer from food allergies then you must be prepared at all times.
What to do if you have an allergic reaction?
If you notice symptoms that indicate you are having an allergic reaction then the first thing you need to do is stay calm. Note down the symptoms of the reaction and call the emergency services immediately. Always have your doctor’s number on speed dial. If you are able to identify the cause of the reaction make sure that you mention it to someone so that they can notify the doctor in case you loose consciousness. If you are feeling light headed or dizzy; then sit in a position whereby your legs are raised higher than your head. This position helps to let the blood flow to your brains and reduces the dizziness. If you have an emergency kit then you must inject yourself immediately. If you are wheezing then take an antihistamine if you are able to swallow.
