I’m sure most of us are familiar with the term ‘Whole Grains’ but few know what they actually are. Whole grains are actually seeds of various plants like wheat, oats, barley, rice and many others. These seeds have the most important job of nourishing the growth of plants. They also give nourishment to people. Grains are consumed by everyone whether they are young or old. Grains are a basic staple diet of many countries.

As I said, whole grains are nothing but seeds. This does not mean that we have to start eating seeds. Thanks to technology, we can now enjoy the benefits of whole grains in many different products. A few foods which have whole grains present in them are popcorn, brown rice, whole wheat flour, sprouted grains and whole wheat bread. It is also present in many of the cereals that are available. But we must be careful in the products we choose as not all of them are whole wheat products but refined products.

Grains help us in gaining nutrients for our bodies which keeps us fit and healthy. They provide important nutrients like carbohydrates and Vitamin B which gives us energy to work or play during the day and is useful for the functioning of our hearts, brains and nervous systems. Minerals like iron, zinc and copper are all present in whole grains which help in the smooth functioning of our body. Whole grains also have components of folic acids which are very helpful and prevent certain birth defects. Whole grains have fiber present in them which are useful for reducing the risk of heart diseases and lowers blood cholesterol levels. Fiber is very necessary in our diets. It helps with stomach problems like constipation and helps with obesity. Magnesium present in whole grains is also necessary for our growth as it makes our bones, teeth and hair stronger.

A person’s diet must always contain whole grains as it keeps you healthy. Whole grains help in preventing certain types of cancers especially those relating to the stomach. Whole grain also controls your diabetes and this is certified by the American Diabetes Association. It keeps your intestines functioning smoothly and helps in digesting food easily. It satisfies our hunger and helps in maintaining your weight which I’m sure all of us are concerned about as we age. Therefore, whole grains are necessary for a balanced diet for people of all ages.
