Canker sores are like ulcers. They form in the mouth and are very common. It normally occurs during teen years and it reduces as we grow older. You must not confuse them with cold sores. The latter is caused by fever and is on the outer lips but canker sores form inside the mouth. Research has not been able to prove the actual reason for the formation of these sores but some of the general causes are stress and anxiety, bacterial infection, hormonal imbalances and heredity. Food allergies, deficiencies and drugs can also lead to the formation of the sores in your mouth. In addition to the above deficiency in iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 is also related to the formation of the sores in the mouth.

In order to take care of the sores at home; you must rinse your mouth with warm water and salt. The salt will help to heal the sores and prevent the further formation of any blisters. Rinse as often as you can. You will experience a change in your condition after a few rinses.

You can also use calamine lotion in your mouth. Though the lotion does not stay long, it has a lasting impact. The best time to use the lotion is at night.

If the sores are in the early stages then you can use steroid salve on the affected areas to get rid of the sores.

In order to prevent the sores you must avoid talking when you are chewing. You must also avoid using hard toothbrushes that may cause damage to the inner lining of your mouth. If you have any cavities you must tend to them immediately as the rough surface of the tooth may cause scratches on the inner lining of the mouth and lead to the formation of the sores. Check the contents of your toothpaste; if the contain sodium lauryl sulfate then you must stop using it immediately. You must also take care of any nutrient deficiencies that you may be suffering from.
