Renal failure treatment options

Renal failure also called Kidney failure occurs from the acute condition or chronic situation caused due to kidney failure. It is a situation when the kidney fails to perform its role properly. There are basically two types of renal failure: one is an acute renal failure (ARF) while the other is a chronic renal failure (CRF). The basic work of the kidney is to filter the waste materials of the body from the blood and to control the functions of the body.

When the kidney fails to work, the work of the kidney that is usually executed has to be replaced vide treatments. These renal failure treatment options have their own advantages as well as disadvantages. Dialysis and transplantations are the treatments offered. Dialysis is of two kinds: Peritonea and Hemodialysis. So, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, kidney transplantation are some of the renal failure treatments that are provided to the individuals suffering from renal failure.

Hemodialysis: Hemodialysis is a process in which artificial kidney machine is used to remove the toxins and the excess fluids from the blood through a filter. In this process, the blood of the body is continuously circulated through the filter which is also called dialyser or artificial kidney. Hemodialysis is the most common process that is followed to treat complex as well as lasting kidney failure. In this type of dialysis, treatments are particularly provided to the patients three times a week at the dialysis centre. Now-a-days this dialysis is also being conducted at home. In this treatment, a fluid called dialysate flows on one side of the membrane while the blood circulates on the other side. Dialysate is made up of sugar (dextrose), water and chemicals that are similar to normal body fluids devoid of toxins.

Peritoneal dialysis: This dialysis is another way of eliminating chemicals, wastes and additional water from the body. In this process, instead of artificial kidney, a lining called peritoneal membrane is used, which is also called the peritoneum. This dialysis procedure is based on the same way as that of hemodialysis. Peritoneum is a thin membrane that lines the abdominal cavity so as to filter the blood.

Kidney Transplantation: The process or way on implanting healthy kidney on to the patient is called kidney transplantation. In some cases, the patient’s own kidney is there inside along with the new kidney that is transplanted while in other cases the kidney is removed before transplantation.
