Simple Diet Tips to Increase Metabolism

July 23, 2009

Most of us are continuously trying out some diet or the other in an effort to lose weight and look healthy. There are a few of us who really have to keep a constant watch on how many calories we eat in a day, because unfortunately for us, even if we think of food that’s enough for us to add a few pounds. Jokes aside, this happens because we have an annoyingly low metabolism.

Let’s first understand what we mean by metabolism and how this affects us. To put it in simple terms, without getting into the complications of science, metabolism is how hard our body works to burn the food we eat.

Some people are blessed with a fast metabolism and never seem to put on weight, no matter how much they eat. If you are not one of the lucky few, don’t worry there is hope.

First of all, start exercising! This will help boost your metabolism; even a simple 30 minute brisk walk will do the trick.

There also are foods that you can eat which will also do the trick. Apart from foods, food eating habits are also beneficial.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It gives you the jump start that your body requires and helps increase the metabolism. Your body was resting throughout the night without any food and because of this it has slowed down. When you eat in the morning, you are actually breaking the fast. This makes your brain alert and helps in increasing the metabolism.

Foods which are heavy and greasy slow down your body. Think about how you feel just after eating large fries and a double burger or any other large deep fried meal. Well, maybe ‘how you feel’ wasn’t the right question here, rather what is it that you feel like doing? That’s right; most of us feel like napping or feel lethargic. Now compare this with how energetic you are after eating light. There’s you answer, foods which are low on the grease and high on fiber help you increase your metabolism.

Foods which are rich in complex carbohydrates as compared to simple carbohydrates are a better choice as well. It’s very simple, the body has to work harder to break down complex foods and that’s why the metabolic rate goes higher.

Never go hungry for a long time, crash diets are the worse, they slow down your body. If you eat less or starve, your body goes in reserve mode; it keeps storing all the food it can and never burns it. Eat 5 to 6 times a day but make sure your meals are healthy and make your body work more to burn more.
