Everything that you do in your life requires your undivided attention. If you are driving, cooking, paying attention to the kids or just reading the morning paper, you need to concentrate. There are several elements in our environment that may disturb us and distract our attention towards our task, yet at other times we find that we are just not able to put our minds to the task at hand. This is extremely common to a school child that is unable to settle down with her books.

There are a few common factors that snatch your attention. Take for example the fact that you are unable to concentrate when you are sleepy or drowsy. That is a fact. When you are sleepy, the organs in your body beginning to slow down thus making your brain slow down as well. If you are trying to get something done chances are that you will not give it your best shot. The best thing you could do in this case is sleep over it, literally. If the task can be put off for a few hours; then it must. Taking a short nap will revitalize your organs and you will wake up energized and twice as alert. On the other hand over sleeping can cause you to be groggy as well, so avoid over sleeping, no matter how tired you are.

An empty stomach and hunger pangs will have you concentrate on one thing only, food. If you are staving chances are that your stomach will only be sending messages to your brain about the nutrition that it is lacking and you will have thoughts of food constantly in your mind. Have a snack or a meal in order to be able to concentrate better and avoid the thoughts of food constantly. Stay well hydrated by drinking water or fruit juices. And on the other hand over eating and binging leads you to feeling bloated and acidic so avoid over eating. If you feel uncomfortable due to a binge session; you are not going to be able to concentrate at all.

If you feel that you are not able to put your mind to the task, get up and take a walk or do some exercises till you get your mind in place. If another task or stressor is snatching your attention; then complete that first to help to take your mind off things and help you to focus on the task at hand.
