Skin Care Routine for Those Above 50

July 23, 2009

Wouldn’t all of love to have flawless skin with no age spots, scars, pimples or black heads. Good skin doesn’t stop at the face; no one likes to see dry flaky arms or legs which have dark spots or scars. Taking care of your skin should be a part of your daily routine where you don’t need to spend hours, but just a few minutes.

What does skin care actually mean? This can be simply put as cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing. These are the three simple and important steps required for maintaining good skin.

You don’t need to go and buy the most expensive products. Just because they are expensive, doesn’t mean that they are the best!

Any product that gives you the desired results is a good product. It’s what suits your skin and not the model on the cover of the product. Also, don’t buy a product just because it suits your friend, try and test a little of the product. Most products are available in different sizes; purchase the smallest size, this way you will be able to judge the results yourself. Also, be careful not to use too many products which claim to offer the same benefits all at the same time. You will never be able to tell which worked and which didn’t.

As we age, our skin tends to loose its elasticity and tends to become dry. Due to this, it is important to use cleansers which are mild and gentle on the skin. Ordinary soaps can make the skin even drier. So look for cleansers meant especially for mature skin, these could be enriched with vitamin E or have more glycerin which is good for nourishing the skin.

Exfoliation basically means getting rid of the dead dry skin. Most people tend to skip this, without realizing its importance. No matter how much moisturizer you put on top, if you don’t get rid of the dry skin, it’s not going to help. Use scrubs which are good for exfoliating the skin, to better results use a loofah to scrub your body. Please keep in mind, it’s your skin that you are scrubbing and not the bathroom floor, be gentle!

Use a moisturizer which offers anti aging benefits and if the weather is dry, re-apply every few hours.

Combining this routine with vitamin supplements which are rich in anti oxidants and help promote healthy looking skin.

Other products like heavier oils such castor oil, vitamin E oil or almond oil are also great for mature skin. These can be applied instead of a moisturizer however you must use these oils in the night.
