The last thing I wanted for my daughter was a stuffy or a runny nose. But the inevitable happened. Dealing with a child and a stuffy nose is a task as the congestion makes the child irritable due to the inability to breathe. When you are faced with the same situation remember that anti biotic medications are harsh and may have adverse effects on the child. The best way to treat the child is at home with a few natural remedies.
Get the child to breathe in steam or vapors with herbs infused in the water. If you are dealing with an infant then you must steam up the bathroom and then stay with the child in the room for a few minutes. The herb infused steam will help to get rid of the mucus from the nasal passage and the respiratory canal. You can clear your sinuses at the same time. For older children you could use a pot of boiling water and a towel and get them to inhale the steam.
There are several suction devices that you could use to get rid of the mucus from an infant. You must be cautious while using this device as you should avoid inhaling with too much force in the infant’s mouth or nose. This method is always the most annoying for the child; but it is effective nonetheless.
When the child is suffering with a congestion she is unable to breathe with ease and hence breaths though the mouth. This causes dehydration and hence the child must be given extra water and juices. Cover the child with a warm blanket when she is sleeping. Remember, the child will suffer from some degree of insecurity and hence as a parent you will need to spend some extra time with the child.
This condition may be due to an allergy or a common cold; you must speak with a doctor in order to prevent the condition for recurring.
