
Most people fear snacking in between meals for fear of gaining weight. Well, you need not be too worried about it as you must remember that power snacking helps to boost your energy levels throughout the day. Snacking does not lead to obesity. That is the biggest myth. What does lead to obesity is snacking throughout the day in huge amounts that you meals are disrupted. Eat healthy snacks that are low fat. Doughnuts and chips are very tempting but they are high in calories and sugar and low in nutrition; hence you will end up eating huge amounts as well. This is a double loss as you do not gain any nutrition from the food and you are left with empty calories that add to the fat content in your body.
Fruits, nuts, yogurt and high fiber whole wheat cookies or crackers are a great snack option. Remember, that the most appealing snacks need to be the ones that are high in nutrition. Always keep a bag of nuts and a fruit with you; especially if you spend the entire day at work. This will prevent you from rushing to the cafeteria and grabbing a bag of chips or a candy bar.
Limit snacking to daytime. Plan you dinner 3 to 4 hours before bedtime and stick to the time. You tend to gain more weight from the food that you eat in the night as there is very little physical activity that you indulge in at that time. If you do feel hungry near bedtime then you can have a cup of low fat milk or a cup of herbal tea with honey. You must be careful not to indulge in ice cream, cakes and cookies and sodas at night. They are the ones that pile on the pounds on your body.
Most of us nibble during TV time. This is dangerous if snacks are not planned. Always make sure that you have a healthy snack in mind for TV time and the weekends. The risk of snacking while watching TV is that you are not aware of the quantity of food you eat as you get engrossed.
Keep a glass of juice or a bowl of porridge as a snack for after school or after work. These are nutritious options; they help to boost your energy levels, do not interfere with dinner and are quick to digest. Hence they are the best snack options.
